In short
Effective September 2, 2026, SGC's lowest grading rate is $50 per card with an estimated 40+ business days, up from $18 according to Sports Illustrated. SGC cites rising demand and longer turnaround and expects further changes into early 2027. Re-check the fee math on any card you planned to send to SGC.
What SGC changed
In a post on X on September 2, 2026, SGC said: “Effective September 2, 2026, SGC will be adjusting its offered service levels in response to rapidly increasing demand and continued expansion of estimated turnaround times.” It pointed collectors to its standard services and pricing page for the full breakdown.
Sports Illustrated Collectibles reported the same day that SGC's lowest rate went from $18 to $50 per card, with an estimated turnaround of 40+ business days. The previous estimate was 40 to 50 business days. (A photo caption in the same SI story describes the old price as “around $20.”)
| Before Sept 2 | From Sept 2, 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest SGC rate | $18 (per SI) | $50 |
| Estimated turnaround | 40–50 business days | 40+ business days |
Why SGC says it raised prices
SGC's announcement says it is “aggressively hiring to grow our team, substantially expanding our operational square footage, and investing in new technology and infrastructure.” It also warned that “future adjustments to service levels should be expected between late 2026 and early 2027.”
SI cites SGC figures showing cards submitted up 24% and orders up 27%, with about 2,000 new submitters since July 1, 2026. That sits awkwardly next to GemRate's August recap, published a day earlier, which counted 42,000 SGC grades in August, down 3% from July and 64% year over year. More cards coming in and fewer going out is exactly how turnaround stretches.
How SGC now compares
SI's report lists the cheapest options elsewhere as of September 2:
| Grader | Cheapest listed tier | Estimated turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| SGC | $50 per card | 40+ business days |
| CGC Bulk | $17 per card (25-card minimum) | 150 working days |
| TAG | $150 per card | 5 business days |
PSA's Value tiers have been paused since June 2, 2026, per its Backlog Tracker. For more on choosing a grader by use case rather than price alone, see our grader-by-use-case guide and our 2026 industry snapshot.

What to do with cards you planned to send to SGC
- Re-run the fee math on every card. At $50 instead of $18, a card that was worth slabbing as a cheap experiment may no longer clear the cost.
- Check the declared value band before you check out. SGC's pricing page sets fees by maximum declared value, so confirm which band applies to each card.
- Plan for change. SGC itself says more service-level adjustments are likely between late 2026 and early 2027. Our high-volume months plan covers how to time submissions when every grader is stretched.
Pre-screen before you pay $50 a card
At the new SGC price, every weak submission costs more. CardGrade gives you a photo-based pre-screen of visible condition so you can decide which cards are worth the fee. It is not an official grade, authentication or appraisal, and CardGrade is not affiliated with PSA, BGS, CGC, SGC or TAG. Try a pre-screen
What we could not confirm
- SGC's exact pre-change price for every tier. SI gives $18 in its text and “around $20” in a caption; SGC's post does not state the old price.
- Whether orders already in SGC's care are affected. SGC's post does not say.
- How SGC's submission figures (+24% cards, +27% orders) are measured or over what period beyond the July 1 reference for new submitters.
