SGC Standard vs PSA Standard: which after you pre-screen?
The old “SGC is four times cheaper” story is gone. SGC Standard now starts at $50 / $85 with a 40+ business-day estimate. PSA Standard is $59.99. Here is how to choose once your cards clear a pre-screen.
September 21, 2026 · Fees checked against PSA trading card grading and CardGrade's live SGC grading hub
In short:
Pre-screen first. Do not spend $50–$60 finding out a card was never a candidate. CardGrade estimates visible condition from photos; it is not a slab and does not authenticate.
Then compare Standard tiers on fit, not nostalgia. At the $50 SGC band the fee delta vs PSA Standard is about $10. Prefer SGC when speed (40+ BD) and holder fit matter more than PSA liquidity. Prefer PSA when comps and buyers are PSA-native.
Watch declared value. SGC Standard jumps to $85 up to $3,500 MDV. That band can cost more than PSA Standard ($59.99 / $1,000 insured) before resale enters the math.
Current Standard snapshot (September 21, 2026)
This is a decision table for the two Standard lanes collectors actually quote against each other — not a full company review. For company-level context see SGC vs PSA. For a dated multi-grader fee matrix, see the Card Grading News September 20 fee snapshot (CardGrade advertises on CGN; fees below were re-checked for this guide).
| Lane | Fee | Published TAT | Value limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| SGC Standard | $50 | 40+ BD | Up to $1,500 declared |
| SGC Standard (next band) | $85 | 40+ BD | Up to $3,500 declared |
| PSA Standard | $59.99 | 90–100 BD | $1,000 max insured |
| PSA Priority (reference) | $79.99 | 70–80 BD | $1,500 max insured |
BD = business days. Estimates are not guarantees. PSA Value remains paused; Standard is PSA's current entry online tier. SGC Expedited (from $150) is a different product — out of scope for this Standard-vs-Standard guide.
Why the pre-screen step changed the math
When SGC Standard was widely quoted around $15, “submit everything raw that looks okay” was a cheap experiment. At $50–$85, a bad submission is no longer a rounding error — especially once shipping and return postage stack on top.
That is the CardGrade lane for this article. Run a visible-condition pre-screen so you only compare graders for cards that still look like submission candidates. Related workflow pieces: PSA Standard vs Priority after pre-screen (tier choice inside PSA) and card shop pre-screen ROI (dealer volume math). This post answers a different question: SGC Standard or PSA Standard once the card clears the filter.
Decision framework
1. Confirm the card is still a candidate
Off-center, heavy corner wear, or obvious surface damage usually means hold — not “pick the cheaper grader.” Pre-screen with CardGrade or a careful manual check. AI estimates visible condition only; graders still inspect under their own standards.
2. Match declared value to the fee band
Rule: If the card fits SGC's $50 / $1,500 band and you accept the SGC holder, the fee is slightly under PSA Standard. If you need the $85 / $3,500 band, PSA Standard can be cheaper on fee alone — then the decision flips to liquidity and TAT, not “SGC is always less.”
3. Price the calendar, not just the invoice
SGC Standard publishes 40+ BD; PSA Standard publishes 90–100 BD. If you are targeting a show, auction consignment window, or seasonal demand cliff, the calendar gap can outweigh a $10 fee delta. If you are patient and PSA comps dominate your card, pay the PSA fee.
4. Check who buys the slab you will get
Fee tables do not sell cards. Look at recent sold comps for your exact card in SGC vs PSA holders. Prefer the grader your buyers already pay up for. That is often PSA for modern liquidity — and sometimes SGC for certain vintage / preference niches. Let comps decide; do not invent a premium.
Bold decision rules
- Fail pre-screen → do not submit to either Standard tier.
- Pass + fits $50 SGC band + SGC comps OK → SGC Standard when 40+ BD helps.
- Pass + PSA-native comps / registry need → PSA Standard even at ~$10 more.
- Declared value pushes SGC to $85 → re-run the fee math against PSA Standard $59.99 before defaulting to SGC.
- Need PSA faster than Standard → see Priority after pre-screen ($79.99 / 70–80 BD), not SGC-by-default.
The workflow
- Pre-screen. Filter obvious misses with CardGrade or manual inspection.
- Bucket candidates by declared value. Note which SGC Standard band ($50 vs $85) would apply.
- Compare sold comps for that card in SGC vs PSA holders.
- Pick Standard lane with the rules above; re-check live fees on PSA and the SGC grading hub before you print a shipping label.

Frequently asked questions
How much is SGC Standard vs PSA Standard right now?
As of September 21, 2026, SGC Standard lists $50 (up to $1,500 declared value) and $85 (up to $3,500), both at 40+ business days. PSA Standard is $59.99 per card with a published 90–100 business day estimate and $1,000 max insured value. Always re-check the live grader pages before you ship.
Is SGC still much cheaper than PSA?
Not at the Standard tier. The headline gap is about $10 per card at the $50 SGC band versus PSA Standard $59.99. Older “$15 SGC vs $60 PSA” framing is stale. Higher declared-value SGC Standard ($85) can cost more than PSA Standard before you even compare liquidity.
Should I pick SGC just because turnaround looks faster?
SGC Standard publishes 40+ business days; PSA Standard publishes 90–100. That gap matters if you need the slab sooner, but it is not a grade or resale guarantee. Factor holder preference and buyer demand for your specific card before optimizing for calendar days alone.
Where does CardGrade fit in this decision?
CardGrade is an AI visible-condition pre-screen, not a grading company and not a certificate. Use it to filter out obvious non-candidates before you pay either grader. It does not authenticate cards or promise a final grade.
When should I still choose PSA Standard over SGC?
Choose PSA when buyer liquidity for PSA holders matters more than the ~$10 fee delta, when your card’s market comps are PSA-heavy, or when you specifically need PSA’s registry / price-guide ecosystem. Pre-screen first either way.
Where can I see the full fee matrix across graders?
For a dated multi-grader snapshot, see Card Grading News’ September 20, 2026 open-doors fee matrix. For evergreen SGC details, use CardGrade’s /sgc-grading and /sgc-vs-psa hubs, which were corrected after the SGC Standard reset.
Pre-screen before you pick a Standard lane
The SGC vs PSA Standard choice only matters for cards worth the fee. Filter first, then spend the $50 or $59.99 on purpose.
