BGS is unique among grading companies for providing four individual sub-grades alongside the overall grade. These sub-grades — Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface — give buyers and sellers unprecedented detail about a card's condition.
The overall BGS grade is calculated from the four sub-grades, but it's not a simple average. BGS weighs each sub-grade and rounds down in edge cases. A card with three 9.5s and one 9 receives an overall 9.5 (Gold Label), while three 9s and one 8.5 typically receives an overall 9.
BGS Black Labels (all four sub-grades at 10) and Gold Labels (9.5 overall) command significant premiums. Understanding sub-grades helps collectors identify undervalued cards — for example, a BGS 9 with a centering sub-grade of 9.5 and a surface sub-grade of 8.5 tells you exactly where the card falls short.
Authentic BGS sub-grade stickers are firmly applied. Peeling or misaligned stickers suggest tampering.
BGS uses an inner BVG (Beckett Vintage Grading) label. Missing or incorrect inner labels are a major red flag.
The overall grade should be mathematically consistent with the four sub-grades. Mismatches indicate label fraud.
Every BGS graded card has a database entry. No record means counterfeit.
Authentic BGS cases have specific weight and rigidity. Knockoffs often feel lighter or less substantial.
BGS labels have precise formatting. Inconsistent fonts, spacing, or alignment indicate a fake.
Found on the BGS label, typically alphanumeric. Also encoded in the barcode.
