CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) built their reputation grading comic books since 2000, establishing themselves as the gold standard in comic certification. In 2020, they expanded into trading cards with CGC Cards, bringing their proven grading methodology to a new market.
CGC's main advantage is consistency. Their graders follow documented standards refined over two decades of comic grading. This systematic approach means CGC grades tend to be highly repeatable — submit the same card twice and you're likely to get the same grade.
CGC cards have gained strong acceptance in the marketplace, particularly among collectors who value grading consistency over brand recognition. Their population reports and free cert lookup add transparency, and their case design is widely regarded as one of the most attractive in the hobby.
Warning signs that a CGC slab may not be authentic
The CGC holographic seal should have visible depth and color shift. Flat or printed seals indicate a counterfeit.
CGC uses a specific shade of green for their labels. Significantly lighter or darker shades suggest a fake.
The inner well of a CGC case has a seal. Any evidence of opening, re-sealing, or adhesive residue is concerning.
Every CGC graded card exists in their database. No results means the slab is fake.
If the online record differs from the physical label, the slab has been tampered with.
CGC cases have specific dimensions. Cases that are slightly larger, smaller, or different thickness may be counterfeit.
Located on the CGC label, a 7–12 digit numeric code. Also scannable via barcode.
