CGC says its Verify Certification service can confirm the description and grade in its database, show holder images for graded cards, and let collectors scan a QR code on current labels. Use each result as a cross-check against the actual card and holder, especially when you are considering a purchase.
CGC's online tools use its current grading scale. Its legacy-grade key says CGC Trading Cards and CSG Gem Mint 9.5 grades are represented online as CGC Cards Gem Mint 10, while retired Perfect 10 grades retain their Perfect 10 status. That distinction matters when comparing an older holder with a current search result.
CGC's Population Report is useful for seeing how many cards it has graded. It does not settle value or purchase suitability: compare the exact card, label version, grade, and recent completed sales before treating a population count as a market conclusion.
Warning signs that a CGC slab may not be authentic
Recheck every digit and try CGC’s official service again later. CGC may temporarily limit search activity, so a failed lookup alone is not a final authenticity conclusion.
Pause the transaction and compare the holder, card, and any available CGC images carefully. A mismatch warrants follow-up with CGC or the seller; it is not a conclusive diagnosis by itself.
CGC supports QR-code scanning on current labels. A code that does not lead to the expected official record is a reason to investigate further.
Visible gaps, damage, or signs of opening are reasons to seek clearer photos, a return option, or an in-person review before buying.
Ask for clear label, holder, and card photos before relying on a certification lookup. The physical holder still needs to match the record.
A population count is a supply input. Compare recent completed sales for the exact card and grade instead of assuming it determines rarity or value.

A mismatch or a holder that appears altered is a reason to pause, seek better photos, and contact CGC or the seller. A lookup alone does not authenticate a physical holder.
